iPhone 12 Mini stuck on 1% battery

Got an iPhone 12 Mini that is stuck on 1% battery and not showing the charge lightning sign on the battery indicator in the corner. Happens with wireless and wired charging so it’s definitely not the charging port nor the cable, what is this caused by?

If no work has been done on the device previously, I would start with a new battery.

It sounds like the battery isn't sending good "gas gauge" data (i.e. battery about how much is left in the proverbial tank). That could be a board problem, but more likely the battery is just giving up the ghost and its time for a new one.

EDIT 02.09.2025 - If you suspect this may be a board issue, here's an image of that the area around the battery connector should look like.

There will be a foam sticker over this area typically, so its easy to knock bits loose with a tool since you cant actually see that they're there.

Areas highlighted in red contain components which carry the signal for battery data. If those areas look like they may have been disturbed by a tool, you may need a board technician to correct the issue

The phone has been fixed before and I just recently changed the battery, however we had problems with the phone overheating when charging and now it’s doing this. Strange part is, it holds charges when charged but only shows 1% and won’t show the charge indication.

@michael90895 That very much sounds like a gas gauge issue. Does it exhibit the same behavior with the old battery connected? If so, then this is likely an issue with the board. But if not, this could be just a bad battery, but there are a few tiny components around the battery connector that could have been nudged or knocked loose during repair. Adding some pictures to my post just for reference in case this is actually the issue.

Unfortunately the old battery has been trashed so it’s impossible for me to test with the old one, I guess I’ll have to get a new test battery then? If it’s not the battery then I am clueless what to do.

Edit: I just checked to see if I could see any damage, but the foam seems intact
